Doha, Qatar: Brazil made a historic move for this World Cup by appointing Carlo Ancelotti, becoming the first foreign manager to lead the Selecao in decades.

The Italian has conquered Europe’s biggest leagues, winning domestic titles in England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy.

He stands alone as the most successful manager in UEFA Champions League history, having won the competition five times. Throughout his career, Ancelotti has been defined by trophies, calm leadership and an ability to bring the best out of world-class players.

Yet one prize remains missing from his glittering collection,the FIFA World Cup.

Now, as he leads Brazil into the 2026 tournament, Ancelotti has the opportunity to complete football’s ultimate achievement and guide the most successful nation in World Cup history back to the summit of the game.

Brazil have lifted the famous trophy five times in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002 but a generation of Brazilian stars has grown up without seeing the Selecao crowned world champions. The last triumph came 24 years ago in Japan and South Korea when Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho inspired Brazil to glory.

Since then, there have been moments of heartbreak.

The painful 7-1 defeat to Germany on home soil in 2014 remains one of the darkest chapters in Brazilian football history. Quarter-final exits in 2018 and 2022 only added to the frustration of a nation that expects success on the biggest stage.

That is why Ancelotti’s arrival has created renewed hope.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, the veteran coach made his ambitions clear: “We want to be the most resilient team in the world” and admitted he is not afraid to say that Brazil want to win the World Cup.

Brazil enter the tournament with a squad that combines experience, flair and youthful excitement. At the centre of attention is Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer. The 34-year-old has battled injuries in recent years, but Ancelotti placed his faith in the forward by including him in the final squad. For Neymar, this tournament could represent the final opportunity to win the one trophy that has eluded him throughout his remarkable career.

Alongside Neymar are some of the brightest talents in world football. Vinicius Junior arrives as one of the most dangerous attacking players on the planet, capable of changing matches with his pace and skill.

Raphinha, Matheus Cunha and Gabriel Martinelli provide quality and experience in attack, while Endrick represents the next generation of Brazilian superstars. In midfield, Casemiro and Bruno Guimaraes offer leadership and control while captain Marquinhos anchors the defence with Gabriel Magalhaes. Behind them stands the reliable figure of Alisson, one of the world’s top goalkeepers.

Brazil’s World Cup journey begins in Group C. Where they open their campaign against Morocco before taking on Haiti and Scotland in their remaining group matches.

On paper, the Selecao will be favourites to top the group, but the expanded World Cup format leaves little room for complacency.

The expectations are enormous, as they always are whenever Brazil step onto a World Cup field. But there is a different feeling surrounding this squad.

Unlike previous tournaments, where Brazil often relied heavily on individual brilliance, Ancelotti has focused on building a balanced team capable of adapting to different challenges.His reputation for managing star players could prove crucial. Throughout his career, he has worked with some of football’s greatest talents and consistently brought out the best in them.

As the world turns its attention to North America, Brazil once again carry the hopes of millions as another chapter in their rich football history awaits.

Ritinha is not an expert in football, or any other sport – but just a female sandbar shark currently residing at the Rio de Janeiro’s AquaRio aquarium.

World Cup predictions usually come from former players, coaches and data analysts. However, Ritinha is the latest to join a unique list of match outcome predictors which solely consist of ‘animals’.

Ritinha swam to the tank with the Brazilian flag on it instead of the one with the Moroccan flag to name the five-time champions as the winners of the Group C clash against the African heavyweights on June 14, making headlines and adding a new chapter to football’s long-running fascination with animal predictors.

Although these predictions lack any scientific validity, they are a great source of entertainment during the biggest of tournaments.

“Through the attention that Ritinha is gaining... We hope to bring more knowledge about sharks to the public,” The director of AquaRio, Marcelo Szpilman told international media following the prediction which went viral after the clip on the internet, gained the admiration of users all across the world.

Ritinha added yet another chapter to the many predictions made by animals.

One of the most notable predictions to come out of an animal occurred during the FIFA World Cup 2010 when Paul the octopus, lived at a German aquarium, became an overnight celebrity after predicting seven out of Germany’s matches as well as Spain’s win in the World Cup finale.

By the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the phenomenon had gone global, with animals including an elephant called Nelly, a kangaroo known as Flopsy and a bunch of Chinese pandas predicting match outcomes through eating choices or their natural behaviors.Different nations participated in the growing trend by relying on animals native to their countries, transforming the prediction of the results into a fun cultural occasion which further engaged fans.

This custom continued at subsequent World Cup tournaments, including in 2018, with Russian cat Achilles predicting many of the matches during the finals.

Despite assurances from experts that the predictions were entirely based on luck rather than any superior intuition, interest was growing, and the tradition followed on into the 2022 World Cup.

Even though animal predictions can sometimes be correct and are not backed by science, they create a lot of interest among fans.

Scientists say animal predictions of football matches are largely the result of chance rather than any ability to foresee future events. Animals typically choose between food bowls, boxes or flags representing competing teams, making their selections simple behavioural choices.

Experts also point to factors such as side preferences, bowl placement and human presence as possible influences to the outcomes.

The prediction that Ritinha made will only be verified when Brazil faces Morocco during their opening match on Sunday, but - win or lose - Ritinha’s predictions will surely remembered within the long line of entertainers related to the ‘beautiful game.’

فهل سيتمكن ليونيل ميسي، في سن الثامنة والثلاثين، من حسم أي جدل متبقٍ حول مكانته كأعظم لاعب في تاريخ كرة القدم، من خلال قيادة الأرجنتين إلى لقب عالمي ثان تواليا؟ أم أن غريمه التاريخي، كريستيانو رونالدو البالغ 41 عاما، سينجح في تحدي عامل الزمن وإلهام منتخب البرتغال الموهوب لتحقيق أول لقب له في كأس العالم؟ أم هل تنهي إنجلترا بقيادة هاري كاين، انتظارها الذي دام 60 عاما لإحراز لقب دولي كبير ثان، بعد تتويجها الوحيد بكأس العالم عام 1966؟
هذه الأسئلة وغيرها ستجد إجاباتها خلال بطولة وصفها رئيس الاتحاد الدولي للعبة السويسري-الإيطالي جاني إنفانتينو، بنبرة متفائلة، بأنها «أعظم عرض شهده الكوكب على الإطلاق».

غضب التذاكر من 1600 دولار إلى 32970
تفاؤل إنفانتينو السلس اصطدم برياح عاتية من التشكيك خلال فترة الإعداد، في ظل مخاوف تتعلق بالقدرة على تحمّل التكاليف، والسياسة، والنزاعات. وأثار الارتفاع الهائل في أسعار تذاكر البطولة موجة غضب عالمية، وضعت الـ»فيفا» وإنفانتينو في موقف صعب للدفاع عن نفسيهما على صعيد العلاقات العامة. فقد بلغ سعر أغلى تذكرة لنهائي كأس العالم 2022 نحو 1600 دولار بسعرها الرسمي؛ أما في نسخة 2026، فيصل سعر أغلى تذكرة رسمية يبيعها الـ»فيفا» إلى 32970 دولارا، في رقم صادم.
ويبدو هذا التضخم واضحا في مختلف مباريات البطولة البالغ عددها 104 مباريات، حيث لا تزال مقاعد كثيرة متاحة في أسواق إعادة البيع الثانوية، رغم الطلب الكبير.
حتى دونالد ترامب، حليف إنفانتينو القوي، أبدى امتعاضه من الأسعار، معربا عن دهشته حين أُبلغ بأن سعر تذكرة مباراة افتتاح المنتخب الأمريكي أمام الباراغواي في لوس أنجلوس يوم الجمعة، أول مباراة تُقام على الأراضي الأمريكية، يبلغ 1000 دولار. وقال الرئيس الأمريكي لصحيفة «نيويورك بوست»: «لن أدفع هذا المبلغ أنا أيضا، بصراحة». وبينما يتحمّل المشجعون أعباء تكاليف السفر إلى البطولة، تساءل منتقدون آخرون عما إذا كانت أجواء المونديال ستتأثر بالمناخ السياسي في الولايات المتحدة.
كما ألقت الضربات العسكرية الأمريكية-الإسرائيلية التي شُنّت على إيران في فبراير بظلالها على البطولة، حيث من المقرر أن يخوض المنتخب الإيراني ثلاث مباريات في دور المجموعات على الأراضي الأمريكية، بدءا من مباراته الافتتاحية أمام نيوزيلندا في 15 يونيو.
وكان ترامب لمح في البداية إلى أن على إيران الانسحاب من البطولة حفاظا على «حياة وسلامة» لاعبيها، قبل أن يتراجع عن تصريحاته.
في المقابل، غيّر المنتخب الإيراني معسكره الأساسي من توكسون في أريزونا إلى مدينة تيخوانا المكسيكية.

72 مباراة في الدور الأول
على الملعب، يُرجح أن يؤدي قرار توسيع البطولة إلى 48 منتخبا، بدلا من 32 في نسخة 2022، إلى إفراغ دور المجموعات من أي إحساس حقيقي بالإثارة أو المخاطرة.
وسيُقام ما مجموعه 72 مباراة في الدور الأول لإقصاء 12 منتخبا فقط، مع تأهل 32 منتخبا إلى الأدوار الإقصائية، أصحاب المركزين الأول والثاني في كل من المجموعات الـ12، إضافة إلى أفضل ثمانية منتخبات تحتل المركز الثالث.

يحدث لأول مرة في تاريخ كأس العالم
ستشهد البطولة أيضا سلسلة من الابتكارات الأخرى. فللمرة الأولى في تاريخ كأس العالم، ستتخلل كل مباراة فترات تبريد في منتصف كل شوط، في إجراء يهدف إلى التخفيف من آثار الحرارة والرطوبة الشديدتين المتوقع تسجيلهما في العديد من الملاعب الـ16 المستضيفة.
وسيتعين على اللاعبين والحكام التكيف مع قوانين جديدة عدة سيتم تطبيقها خلال البطولة، من بينها إلزام المنتخبات بإجراء التبديلات خلال 10 ثوانٍ للحد من إضاعة الوقت.
كما سيشمل تشديد مكافحة الإساءات العنصرية تعريض اللاعبين للطرد بالبطاقة الحمراء في حال تغطية الفم باليد أو الذراع أو القميص أثناء مواجهة أحد الخصوم.

أطول مباراة نهائية في التاريخ!!
أما المباراة النهائية الشهر المقبل، فقد تكون الأطول في تاريخ كأس العالم، نتيجة قرار إقامة عرض فني على طريقة «سوبر بول» خلال فترة ما بين الشوطين، بمشاركة مادونا وشاكيرا وفرقة «بي تي إس». وسيؤدي هذا العرض إلى تمديد فترة الاستراحة بين الشوطين من 15 دقيقة تقليديا إلى نحو 25 دقيقة.
