Al Sadd suffer defeat to Esteghlal
Doha, Qatar: Esteghlal FC took advantage of their chances to overcome Qatar’s Al Sadd SC 3-0 in their AFC Champions League Elite opener at the Basra International Stadium in Basra yesterday. moryak.biz
Jasir Asani capitalised on a defensive error to fire the Iran outfit ahead in the ninth minute before Saeid Saharkhizan extended their lead two minutes after the break and Esmaeil Gholizadeh sealed the match five minutes into injury time.
In a match largely dominated by the 19-time Qatar Stars League champions, Razvan Lucescu’s side were let down by poor finishing, with only one shot on target and a goal overturned by VAR.
Al Saad made the stronger start but it was Esteghlal who struck the opening blow in the ninth minute when a wayward pass by Claudinho gifted the ball to Asani, who rounded defender Boualem Khoukhi and lashed the ball beyond Meshaal Barsham.
The 2011 champions gradually regained their composure, with Roberto Firmino connecting to Hashim Ali’s cross and looping his header over the bar in the 19th minute.
The Brazilian then set up Claudinho 10 minutes later but the striker fired just wide of the right post after weaving past the defence. The ever-threatening Firmino’s shot from the edge of the area in the 35th minute forced keeper Habib Abbasi into a diving save as Al Saad pushed forward in search of the equaliser only to be frustrated at the last.
A counterattack by the nine-time Iran champions in the 42nd minute had Barsham twisting in mid-air to deny a powerful strike by Amir Mohammad Razzaghinia from the edge of the box before Firmino closed the action in the first half by heading wide of the left post.
Saharkhizan gave Esteghlal the perfect start to the second half when he latched on to a through ball from Asani two minutes in, evaded a tackle from Paulo Otavio and drilled the ball through Barsham’s legs into the left corner.
Al Saad thought they had reduced the scoreline in the 57th minute when Firmino struck from point-blank range but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a handball by Yusuf Abdurisag.
Gholizadeh put the match beyond Al Saad’s reach five minutes into stoppage time when he picked up Mohammadhossein Eslami’s cross, snuck in between two defenders and booted the ball past Barsham. (AFC)
Qatar riders set for Asian Games challenge
Doha, Qatar: Qatar will field 12 riders across show jumping, dressage and eventing at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, which will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4.
The riders have completed an extensive preparation programme, including summer training camps aimed at sharpening their technical and physical readiness ahead of the continental event.

“We are pleased to have reached this stage of preparation for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. We have full confidence in our riders’ abilities, experience and potential to deliver strong performances at this major continental event,” he said.
Qatar Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon Federation President Bader Al-Darwish
Al-Darwish said the three teams had benefited from a comprehensive summer programme, with training camps focused on technical and physical development.
“We have an outstanding group of participating riders, and we look forward to seeing them translate their extensive preparation into strong performances and positive results. We recognise, however, that the competition at the Asian Games will be fierce, given the participation of the continent’s elite riders,” he added.
The equestrian competitions will begin on September 21 with the team and individual dressage phases of eventing. The cross-country phase will take place on September 22, followed by the team and individual show jumping rounds on September 23.
The dressage competition will continue with the team final and individual qualifiers on September 25, followed by individual rounds on September 26 and 27.
The show jumping team competition will begin on October 1, with the individual events scheduled for October 3 and 4.
Qatar will seek strong results in both team and individual competitions, with the participation reflecting the growing depth and international experience of its equestrian riders.
Al-Darwish said the federation was confident that the cooperation between the riders and technical and administrative teams would help Qatar make a strong impression at the Games.
OFFICIAL: Hamza Abdelkarim Extends Barcelona Contract

Barcelona announced on Friday that Egypt forward Hamza Abdelkarim has agreed to a contract extension until June 2030.
The 18-year-old will sign the agreement on September 15, in club president Joan Laporta’s office. He will then address the media, Barcelona said in their announcement.
The new agreement extends his stay by one year beyond the deal Barcelona announced in June, when they exercised their purchase option following his loan from Al Ahly. That contract ran until June 30, 2029.
Barcelona did not disclose his salary or a release clause in their statement, but earlier reports had linked the negotiations to a proposed increase in his release clause to €150 million.
Abdelkarim earned his competitive first-team debut against Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou on August 31 after finishing Barcelona’s pre-season as their leading scorer with four goals. He had scored twice against Birmingham City before adding goals against Basel and former club Al Ahly.
Flick publicly backed the Egyptian before the Rayo match, having left him out of Barcelona’s opening two league games.
“He deserves to play, and he will play,” Flick said, as KingFut previously reported.
The German coach also praised Abdelkarim’s daily improvement, attitude and mentality while promising him an opportunity to demonstrate his quality in La Liga.
Abdelkarim initially joined Barcelona on loan on February 1. Administrative formalities delayed his youth-team debut until March 8, when he scored in a 2-2 draw away to Huesca.
He subsequently scored a hat-trick in the under-19 side’s 9-0 victory over Montecarlo, which secured the División de Honor title. His performances prompted Barcelona to make the transfer permanent during the summer.

Nairobi to host 2029 world athletics championships in African first
Paris, France: Nairobi will host the 2029 world outdoor athletics championships, beating off competition from London, Munich and Rome to become the first African hosts, World Athletics announced Tuesday.
The 2031 championships will be held in Munich, track and field's governing body said after a council meeting in Budapest, host to the recently-concluded Ultimate Championship.
"We were fortunate to have four outstanding bids for 2029 and 2031, and this was not an easy decision for the Council," World Athletics president Sebastian Coe told a press conference.
The 2027 event has already been awarded to Beijing.
"This council decision today means we're able to deliver our World Athletics Championships in Asia, Africa, and Europe over its next three editions," the Briton added.
"Taking our championships to Africa for the first time will be historic. Nairobi has presented a compelling and an emotional bid."
Coe added: "It was important that the world championship should come to Africa when we had the right host, the right bid, and the right circumstances.
"Nairobi has demonstrated emphatically that this is their moment to supercharge the development of our sport in Kenya and across Africa, leaving a compelling legacy that inspires a continent."
Kenya, which failed with a bid for the 2025 world championships, has previously hosted the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, the World under-18 Championships in Nairobi in 2017 and the World under-20 Championships in the capital in 2021.
Nairobi also staged the 2010 African Athletics Championships.
"Having also been part of the bidding process for 2025, the (Nairobi) team understood and grasped what was required, and came back with a stronger proposition, and a renovated Kasarani Stadium, which is currently undergoing a complete overhaul ahead of hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027," said Coe.
