SA Cup: Ruthless Boland edge out Eagles
Heyneke Meyer’s SWD Eagles missed out on Currie Cup qualification as the Boland Cavaliers snatched the final SA Cup semi-final spot on points difference.
SWD hammered the Leopards 69-19 in George on Saturday, but Boland’s ruthless 85-29 dismantling of Eastern Province in Wellington secured their place in both the SA Cup semi-finals and this year’s Currie Cup Premier Division.
Both sides finished level on 32 log points, but Boland’s vastly superior points difference of +212 compared to SWD’s +61 proved decisive.
The Eagles, coached this season by former Springbok mentor Meyer, were one of the competition’s most improved teams and will be bitterly disappointed after falling just short.
MORE: Cheetahs sneak into Currie Cup
The Eagles and Boland had been left in a straight shootout for the fourth and final spot after the Cheetahs pulled off a 32-31 win against log leaders Griquas in Bloemfontein on Friday night.
The dramatic encounter saw Griquas winger Dylan Maart score after the hooter to give the visitors a chance for victory but replacement flyhalf Liam Koen missed the difficult conversion to spark wild celebrations among the home fans.
Boland wing Xavier Mitchell starred in Wellington, scoring a remarkable seven tries in the 13-try rout of EP on the occasion of his 50th cap for the Cavaliers.
Mitchell crossed four times in the first half as Boland took complete control before adding three more after the break in a stunning individual display.
Boland now join Griquas, the Pumas and the Cheetahs in the SA Cup semi-finals.
Top-of-the-table Griquas will host Boland in Kimberley, while defending champions the Pumas welcome the Cheetahs to Nelspruit.
This year’s Currie Cup Premier Division will feature the four SA Cup qualifiers alongside the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers.
SWD, meanwhile, will compete in the Currie Cup First Division together with the Valke, Griffons, Leopards, Eastern Province and Border.
SA Cup Round 10 results
Cheetahs 32 Griquas 31
Pumas 61 Griffons 12

Galatasaray entered the night needing a result to seal the title and delivered in front of their home crowd in Istanbul, with Osimhen and midfielder Lemina providing the decisive contributions in a match that swung dramatically before the final whistle.
‘We are very happy’
“Antalya made things difficult for us tonight; but we are Galatasaray. We need to overcome these kinds of matches. We go out onto the field to perform well in these kinds of games. We became champions tonight. We are very happy,” Osimhen told Galatasaray website.
On his part, Lemina said: “I am very happy. We always dreamed of this beautiful moment and worked very hard to see it. I want to congratulate the team, our coach, our fans and our staff.”
Senegal defender Ismail Jakobs said: “I feel free. We played a tough match, but we didn’t give up and it continued. For me, it was a very long season with the Africa Cup and other matches. Now it’s time for vacation, time to rest.”
Lemina, introduced as a second-half substitute along with Dutch winger Noa Lang, broke the deadlock at the 56th minute to restore the home side’s lead.
Dikmen pulled one back again for Antalyaspor at the 62nd minute, making it 2-2 and keeping the tension alive, but Osimhen converted a penalty four minutes later to restore Galatasaray’s advantage for good.
Osimhen then added a second goal at the 88th minute to put the result beyond doubt. Galatasaray’s 26th championship surpasses their own record and cements the club’s standing as the most decorated side in Turkish football history.
Zambia change league calendar to August, increases teams
The Football Association of Zambia Council has voted overwhelmingly to change football calendar from the May to August cycle to the March to November cycle.
Following a recommendation from the executive committee, the council deliberated on the matter before putting it to a vote.
Among the proponents of the motion were Mweshi Mupeta from Kansanshi Dynamos who buttressed his submission with his team’s experience over league fixture with Green Eagles which was played over two days due to a heavy downpour.
A Lumwana Radiants backed the proposal through Jonathan Mapipo. Others who supported the motion were Joel Kabika from Muza FC, Mwila Mumba from Mufulira Wanderers and Emmanuel Simbeye from Nchanga Rangers.
Dynamos, Red Arrows countered motion
Mwiza Maseko from Jumulo cautioned the house that the support should not make the clubs relent in working on infrastructure.
Power Dynamos through James Sakala and Red Arrows through colonel Kambani Lungu countered the motion saying the change would disadvantage Zambian teams participating in CAF games.
Sakala said the change of calendar needed to be aligned with the international transfer window while Colonel Lungu cautioned that the change of calendar would make it difficult for CAF envoys to play friendly games with international clubs.
After intense deliberation, the matter was put to a vote with the members voting overwhelmingly to change the calendar.
Super League teams increased to 20
Meanwhile, FAZ Council resolved to increase the number of Super League teams from 18 to 20 effective next season as proposed by the Executive Committee.
In supporting the motion, Northern Province Committee David Mbulo said the provincial teams supported the motion as it gave them hope of one day having representation in the top level.
Mutondo Stars’ Stanely Kaseko submitted that increasing the teams to 20 would give the teams the advantage of playing more games. Prison Leopards representative a Mr Nsondo said the increase of teams would increase gate takings for teams.
Jumulo’s Mwiza Maseko opposed the increase saying it would reduce the competitiveness of the league. Maseko noted that the burden for self-sponsored teams would be heavier with more fixtures to play for teams.
In countering the submission, Zanaco Chief Executive Officer Owen Chimpinde submitted that the increase in the number of teams would reduce the competitiveness of the league.
Kafue Celtic’s Eric Mwanampwaya urged that the matter of fair officiating be taken into account as the clubs would spend more on increased fixtures.
