The Night Messi Wrote Another World Cup Masterpiece

Lionel Messi cried at the final whistle. Unlike the tears that marked the World Cup farewells of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, these were tears of triumph.

As Argentina’s players tossed their captain into the air in celebration, the entire stadium stood in awe. Nights like these defy description. Every tournament seems to add another chapter to Messi’s extraordinary legacy, and against Egypt he produced yet another masterpiece.

For 67 minutes, Argentina looked destined for elimination. Egypt had stunned the defending champions with two goals, Yasser heading home from a Mohamed Salah corner in the opening quarter of the match before Mostafa Ziko doubled the lead midway through the second half. Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a city that rebuilt itself from the ashes after the American Civil War and adopted the phoenix as its symbol, witnessed a comeback worthy of that very emblem.

Messi was at the heart of it all.

Egypt’s defence had frustrated Argentina throughout, but once the captain found space, everything changed. Cristian Romero pulled one back from Messi’s inviting cross before, four minutes later, Messi himself levelled the contest with a superb volley from the edge of the area. Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround with a towering header that sent Argentina into the quarter-finals.

The scoreline, however, tells only part of the story.

Egypt will feel aggrieved that Mostafa Ziko’s second-half strike was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul earlier in the attacking move. Had the goal stood, Argentina would have trailed 3–0. Equally, Messi had earlier squandered a penalty that could have levelled the score much sooner. It was another rare miss from 12 yards, his second penalty failure of the tournament, after Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed correctly to make an outstanding save.

For a brief moment, it seemed the script had deserted Argentina.

Then Messi rewrote it.

There are footballers who operate within the limits of possibility. Messi belongs to a different category altogether. Just when defeat appears inevitable, he finds another way. As long as he wears Argentina’s colours, belief never fades, no matter the score or the stage.

His team-mates celebrated accordingly, lifting him high above their shoulders as he struggled to hold back his emotions. On a night when the world thought Argentina were finished, Messi once again reminded everyone why football continues to reserve its greatest stage for its greatest player.
