It was not the best week for USC basketball, as the Trojans' men's basketball team's season has fully caved in. To make matters worse, it goes deeper than the games. Chad Baker-Mazara, the star of the team, was just kicked off the squad this past weekend. Things are not that much better with the Trojans women's team, which suffered a humbling defeat to Penn State and then got embarrassed by rival UCLA.
Here are my top performers across hoops this past week for USC, both in college and the NBA:
Women's Basketball - Jazzy Davidson
In the loss to Penn State, Jazzy Davidson was still at her best as she chipped in 22 points, had 5 assists, and 3 steals. Davidson has been consistent all season long and has shown up for her squad even in the toughest moments this season. The Trojans secured the 9th seed in the Big Ten tournament, but you cannot count out this squad because of Davidson and her counterparts.
Women's Basketball - Kara Dunn
In a humbling loss this past week, Kara Dunn still shone vs Penn State. For the Trojans, Dunn led the team with 24 points, drained 6 3-pointers, and had 6 rebounds. It is tough to look at the bright spot in a tough loss like the one vs Penn State, but the Trojans are consistently getting great production from their guards. This team has to have the utmost confidence vs any opponent, with the trio they have.
NBA - Nikola Vučević
Nikola Vučević continues to display that he is settling in well with his new squad. In 9 games with the Celtics, Vučević has embraced his role of coming off the bench, and he is averaging 12.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest off the bench. This past week, Vučević had a dominant showing vs the Nets as he posted 28 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. It is games like that where he displays that he can be the best scorer on the floor on any given night. That is a huge necessity for Boston as they push for a deep playoff run. Even on games where his scoring is not as high, like on Sunday, he is still able to be impactful in other ways. He finished Sunday's game with 11 points, shooting 3-6 from 3 and having 12 boards. Vučević, so far, has been an amazing addition for the Boston Celtics.
NBA - Kevin Porter Jr.
Kevin Porter Jr. remains one of the focal points of this young Bucks team without Giannis. The Bucks went 8-4 in February, in part due to how stellar Kevin Porter Jr. has been. Porter Jr. kicked off last week with 2-star performances. Against the Heat last Monday, Porter Jr. had 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Against Cleveland, the very next day, Porter Jr. had 20 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. He continues to be a stat sheet stuffer and run the Bucks offense. Without Porter Jr., the Bucks would feel the loss of Giannis much more, but with each great performance, he has lessened that blow. Must recently Porter Jr. had two off games, scoring-wise, but still chipped in 10 assists in one game and 6 rebounds, coupled with 4 assists in the other game. He really has turned his career around in Milwaukee and kept the Bucks relevant.
NBA - Isaiah Collier
Collier has flipped between being in the starting lineup and coming off the bench this season. In either role, Collier is getting a good amount of minutes, and he is rewarding the Jazz with great production. This past week, Collier put up solid production coming off the bench. In the first game, Collier had 11 points and 7 assists in 27 minutes. He then put up his best performance of the week off the bench on Saturday as he put up 21 points, 7 assists, and 2 steals. It is hard to get production from rotation guys like this on a consistent basis, but it looks like the Jazz have that with Collier.
NBA - Evan Mobley
Evan Mobley is regaining full strength and becoming healthier and healthier. It looks like he is returning to dominance. Last week, Mobley was a double-double machine as he had two double-double performances. Against the Pistons, Mobley looked like a star, as he had 23 points, drained 4 3-pointers, had 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Unfortunately, the Cavs came up short that game, but that was a very encouraging performance. In the victory yesterday, Mobley put up 17 points and had 13 rebounds. The Cavs will need to get more of the dominant scoring version of Mobley if they want to come out of the East.
