Chiefs reportedly trade star cornerback Trent McDuffie to Rams for multiple picks, including 2026 first-rounder

The Kansas City Chiefs are parting ways with one of their best defensive players. The team reportedly agreed to trade cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for multiple draft picks, including the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

In exchange for McDuffie, the team will receive four draft picks: A 2026 first-round pick, a 2026 fifth-round pick, a 2026 sixth-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick, per NFL Network.

McDuffie, 25, is coming off a season in which he started 13 games with the Chiefs before being shut down with a knee injury. He registered one interception, one sack and one forced fumble during the regular season. He graded out extremely well despite the injury, ranking as the 11th cornerback in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus' metrics.

McDuffie performed even better in both 2023 and 2024. After a breakout season in 2023, in which he picked up five forced fumbles and three sacks, McDuffie was named to the first-team All-Pro team. He was nearly as impressive the following year, making the second team All-Pro team and getting a down-ballot vote for Defensive Player of the Year.

While he's been an excellent player for the Chiefs since the team selected him with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, McDuffie was entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2026. With free agency fast approaching, the Chiefs either didn't want to pay McDuffie, or didn't think they could afford to keep him around beyond the 2026 season. The Chiefs will attempt to make up for McDuffie's loss with the newly-acquired draft picks.

That decision was met with disappointment from some Chiefs players, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Xavier Worthy also seemed sad to see McDuffie get traded

For the Rams, the move signals that the team is going to try and go all-in to win a Super Bowl next season. Giving up four picks for a player entering the final year of his deal would normally present a massive risk, but it appears McDuffie plans to work out a long-term deal with the Rams. Despite McDuffie's excellence, it's still a steep price to pay, and a sign that the Rams are valuing the present over the future right now.

That might be the best track for the team at the moment, especially considering the team reached the NFC Championship last season. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is coming off an MVP season, but is 38 years old and quickly approaching the end of his career. Stafford even took some time to think about his future after the 2025 season, though did commit to playing for the Rams in 2026 while accepting his MVP award. There's no indication Stafford will retire after 2026, but the team still realizes its window with the MVP is not far off.

While Stafford's situation likely played a big role in the Rams making the trade, it helps that the team is in great shape elsewhere on the roster.

The team's defense has shown steady improvement since the surprising retirement of Aaron Donald after the 2023 season. The Rams ranked 17th in points allowed in 2024, and improved to 10th in points allowed in 2025.

On offense, Puka Nacua is arguably the best receiver in the NFL, and Kyren Williams remains one of the most dependable running backs in the game. Stafford was the literal MVP last season and shows no signs of slowing down just yet.

All of that makes the Rams well-equipped to turn in a top-10 season on both offense and defense in 2026. That type of performance would once again solidify the team as a Super Bowl contender.

After coming so close to a championship last season, the Rams will hope the addition of McDuffie is the one thing that can push them over the edge in 2026.
